Recent terp excavations

The Groningen Institute of Archaeology of the University of Groningen frequently conducts excavations in terps in Groningen (Englum, Wierum) and Friesland (Anjum, Achlum, Jelsum, Oosterbeintum, Firdgum, Arkum, Dronrijp). Most of these terps have been partly levelled, leaving terp remainders with steep sides.

Research of these steep sides gives easy access to information on the structure of terps and the development of material culture and land use.

In the levelled areas, the so-called terp soles, remnants of terp layers can still be found. These can also successfully be excavated. The Association of Terp Research contributes to this research by publishing the results of terp excavations.
